Tom's Rope Lashing

Recommended Lashing to Secure Webbing Straps.

The recommended lashing method for Hennessy Hammocks involves wrapping webbing straps around the tree and using a figure 8 pattern to secure the rope. This method helps to:

  • Prevent jammed knots: The figure 8 pattern allows for easy adjustment and removal of the rope.

  • Extend rope life: By spreading the load with multiple wraps and avoiding metal parts, the rope is less prone to wear and tear.

  • Ensure safety: The soft webbing straps prevent abrasion to the rope, and the figure 8 pattern provides a secure attachment.

Tom Hennessy, the designer, emphasizes the importance of simplicity, safety, and reliability in his design. He has tested various methods and materials, including carabiners and rap rings, but prefers the figure 8 lashing method for its effectiveness and safety.

To set up the lashing, follow these steps:

  1. Wrap the webbing straps one or more times around the tree.

  2. Pass the rope ends through the webbing loops.

  3. Adjust the hammock until it is centered and the ridge line is level and under light tension.

  4. Wrap the loose rope end completely around the tensioned support rope and then drop it down into the space between the webbing loops and the tree.

  5. Tighten any slack in the lashing and repeat the figure 8 pattern at least three more times.

  6. Tie off the rope with two half hitches, leaving at least 6 inches of rope.

By following this method, you can ensure a safe and secure setup for your Hennessy Hammock.
